Step by step to enable secure donations for your church.
Why a Nonprofit Account?
You may wonder if a standard PayPal Business account is enough. Technically yes, but for churches and nonprofit organizations, PayPal's confirmed charity status offers significant benefits:
- Lower processing fees for eligible donations
- Access to PayPal fundraising tools and PayPal Giving Fund
- Increased trust for donors
- Reduced risk of donation payments being flagged as commercial transactions
The Key Requirement: 501(c)(3) Status
In the United States, PayPal verifies if your church or ministry is officially recognized as a nonprofit organization.
Most churches qualify through one of the following:
- IRS 501(c)(3) determination
- Religious institution status
- Eligible faith-based nonprofit organization
PayPal typically requires proof that your organization is legally registered and that you are authorized to act on its behalf.
Step 1
Create Your Account & Prepare Documents

Recommended documents:
- IRS Determination Letter (501(c)(3))
- EIN (Employer Identification Number)
- Church bank account information
- Government-issued ID of authorized representatives
- Letter of authorization from church leadership (if applicable)
- Articles of Incorporation or organizational documents
Tip:
Combine all supporting documents into a single PDF before uploading whenever possible.
Step 2
Charity Verification
Create a PayPal Business Account and select:
Business Type:
"Nonprofit Organization"
PayPal will verify:
- Your organization
- Your authority to represent the church
- Your linked church bank account
Most verifications are completed within a few business days.
If additional information is required, PayPal will contact you by email.
Step 3
Apply for Charity Status
After creating the account, complete PayPal's charity confirmation process.
Benefits include:
- Lower nonprofit processing rates
- Access to PayPal Giving Fund
- Enhanced donor confidence
- Eligibility for donation-specific PayPal features

Verify Charity Status
When calling, ask for assistance with:
"Confirmed Charity Status" or "Nonprofit Verification"

Almost finished! Get Your Client ID & Secret
Once your account is active:
- Log in to the PayPal Developer Dashboard
- Open "Apps & Credentials"
- Click "Create App"
- Switch from SANDBOX to LIVE
- Copy your Client ID and Secret
