Meet the donkey

Nico Bijl

Developer

“Building software for churches — across denominational boundaries. That’s exactly what I was looking for.”

I knew Donkey Mobile long before I started working here. I’ve been using the app since 2020, including as an administrator at my own church. So when I first reached out to Henrik in 2025, I didn’t need convincing.

Before that, I spent years working as a developer through OpenValue Rotterdam, where I had been involved since the office first opened. I worked with some great clients, but my assignment at the Port of Rotterdam stands out most — an impressive organisation with challenging technical problems to solve. Great work, great people. But over time, I realised I was looking for something closer to home.

Being involved in the church has never been a side note for me. The fact that my work now directly contributes to how church members stay connected — across hundreds of churches of all shapes and sizes — makes this different from other projects. Not just one church, but many churches. Across denominational boundaries, as I like to describe it.

Building good software for churches requires the same thing as building good software for anyone else: paying attention to the people who use it, and creating systems that simply work when it matters. That’s what I bring to Donkey Mobile. And I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead.

Would you like to help build the future of the church, just like Nico?
