Michel Trouwborst

“Using technology for God’s Kingdom while building a product that keeps growing. That’s exactly what I was looking for.”

For years, I worked as a full-stack developer, building custom software for SMEs and the Dutch Ministry of Defence. I was involved from start to finish: analysing the problem, thinking through the solution, designing, building, deploying and delivering it. Along the way, I got a behind-the-scenes look at many different organisations, which was incredibly valuable.

Still, something started to bother me. You build something, deliver it, and then that’s it. The budget is spent, the project is closed. What you’ve made stays the way it is, even though you can already see how it could be improved. I missed that depth: the opportunity to really invest in something and help a product grow over time.

For a while, I had felt the desire to use my technical skills to serve God’s Kingdom. And I quickly knew that Donkey Mobile was where I wanted to do that. But every time I was almost ready to make the move, a new challenge came up at work. One that was worth taking on, and one I didn’t want to leave half-finished. So it took almost two years before I finally scheduled that coffee. And one thing led to another.

Now, as a frontend developer, I get to work on something that does keep growing. I build, improve and fix our web applications, such as Stable and the Web App, and I contribute to a platform that is used by more than 200,000 church members across the Netherlands every week.
