We have all been there while creating icons. Trying to find the perfect balance between a recognisable and the custom style we want to present. Sure, the internet is full of icon sets we can use for inspiration. But lets be honest, so often we take them from the internet and customise it to fit our project. Nothing wrong with that!

The real pain is when you thought you found a good icon to work from just to see that the .svg file is a mess. We all try to use the best recognisable icons, the ones that we all know and use in our favourite apps and websites. And still it is often better to create icons from scratch because it would be more work to customise them..

I figured, now is the time for me to share my work with you guys. Because sharing is caring :).

I tried to optimise how to design flexible icons while creating our white-label app platform for church communities. I tried to optimise my Sketch library to support easy customisation and rebranding icons.

About the project

At Donkey Mobile we are creating a white-label (mobile) platform for Churches. There are an estimate of 27 million local Christian congregations worldwide. All congregations are communities with almost always their own organisation and smaller communities within.

There are many platforms out there which provide social and / or administrative features. But we wanted to create a platform specifically to support the tight community of Churches. It is all about looking after, inspiring and supporting one another. Optimising communication between all the different "workgroups" and small groups, bands and you name it.

All these congregations have their own identities. We believe that these communities deserve their own platform, coloured in their own brand. This is necessary to support the safe and trusted feeling that is so important to these communities. But then again, most of us UX/Designers will deal with customers who pay to have their brand properly represented.

This is where the importance of an easily customisable design system comes in play. To successfully implement a white label platform, you need to create layouts and icons you can use for all brand styles you would like to roll out.

Improve workflow with customisable layer styles

Why create new icons from scratch for every project? Or create a new icon for every different color? I think we can agree that layer and font styles in Sketch is a huge help to achieve style consistency in huge project. These icons are created to be easily customisable with your own layer styles.

The thing with white label projects is that the base of the design should fit all kinds of brand styles and colours. The icons I created might fit my project, but you'd want to apply your own style to it. I have taken it on me to add layer styles to all icons, so you just have to change it or apply your own :)
